NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 12 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ – Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged the expansion of the UN Security Council to give greater representation to countries of the Global South.
"We consider it necessary to continue working with like-minded BRICS partners to improve the effectiveness of the UN. Expanding the Security Council, particularly by increasing the representation of countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America, would certainly help achieve this goal," Putin said at the summit in New Delhi.
Russia places the highest priority on preserving and strengthening the UN's central role in international affairs, the Russian president added.
"The UN Charter is the key source of international law," Putin stressed.
He assessed the international system was currently failing as a result of efforts by a number of countries to provoke conflicts and create new areas of tension around the world.
