WASHINGTON, AUGUST 5 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ - Cyclosporiasis, an infection that can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, has been reported in 47 of the 50 US states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The agency said that the states worst affected by the outbreak are Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and North Carolina.
The Washington Post reported yesterday that cases of cyclosporiasis linked to lettuce imported from Mexico had been recorded in 15 US states, making this the largest outbreak to date.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday that two people in the state had died as a result of the infection.
Cyclosporiasis is usually not life-threatening and is treated with antibiotics. The pathogen is transmitted through contaminated fresh fruit, vegetables, or water.
