MAJORITY OF GERMANS WANT MERZ TO STEP DOWN

BERLIN, SEPTEMBER 22 /SRNA/ - A majority of Germans believe Chancellor Friedrich Merz should resign after his Christian Democratic Union /CDU/ suffered a heavy defeat in elections in two states, according to the latest polls.

According to a poll conducted by RTL television, 55 percent of respondents said they would support Merz stepping down, while 40 percent believe he should remain in office.

German media report that Merz is under immense pressure after the CDU suffered its worst-ever result in regional elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, failing to clear the threshold for parliamentary representation for the first time.

The CDU also lost the mayoral election in Berlin, just two weeks after the party was defeated by the Alternative for Germany /AfD/ in the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt.

Merz’s popularity is plummeting due to his package of economic, tax and social welfare reforms.

He has so far said he will remain in office, but speculation is growing that he could lose support within his own party.
