BELGRADE, AUGUST 21 /SRNA/ - The president of the Alliance of Serbs from the Region, Miodrag Linta, said that it was shameful and inhumane that the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague was ignoring legal and humanitarian grounds and refusing to allow General Ratko Mladić to receive appropriate medical care.
Linta called on Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić to continue urging the Hague Mechanism to finally allow General Mladić to receive treatment in Serbia, where he would have the necessary medical care and conditions for recovery.
"General Mladić's health has deteriorated significantly following another stroke, but also due to inadequate medical treatment at the detention unit in Scheveningen over an extended period. Even the Hague doctors say that his condition has worsened and that he is getting closer to the end," Linta said.
Linta stressed that, under international humanitarian law, General Mladić, like every human being, has the right to appropriate healthcare and medical treatment, the Alliance of Serbs from the Region said in a statement.
General Mladić's son, Darko Mladić, told SRNA that the general is in the worst condition he has ever been in, and confirmed that a cardiologist from Serbia will examine him today, adding that The Hague is expected to provide the cardiologist with his medical records.
Republika Srpska Justice Minister Goran Selak announced that Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić will submit a new request to Graciela Gatti Santana, President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, for General Mladić to be allowed to receive treatment in Serbia or Republika Srpska, given his extremely serious health condition.
General Mladić has been in a detention hospital in The Hague since 2024, where he is receiving palliative care.
The Mechanism has repeatedly rejected requests for him to be released temporarily to receive medical treatment in Serbia.
