BERLIN, NOVEMBER 1 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ - Co-leader of the right-wing Alternative for Germany /AfD/ party Alice Weidel said that the Christian Democratic Union /CDU/ was responsible for the riots across the country, citing its tolerance of left-wing extremism and uncontrolled immigration.
"Yesterday's riots are primarily the result of CDU policies, which for years have pandered to and supported left-wing extremism, combined with uncontrolled migration, where criminals have no fear of consequences," she wrote on X.
Weidel wished a speedy recovery to the police officers injured in the clashes, insisting that only the AfD could bring those responsible to justice.
Tens of thousands of people demonstrated yesterday in more than 30 German cities. The youth-led protest movement Generation Z Takes Charge said that around 120,000 people had taken part.
Young people are demanding increased funding for education, lower living costs, social justice and other measures.
The demonstrations escalated into riots and clashes with police overnight in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and Cologne.
Demonstrators threw stones, bottles and firecrackers at police officers, set up burning barricades, smashed shop windows and looted stores. Police used water cannons and pepper spray to disperse the crowds.
