NEW YORK, OCTOBER 26 /SRNA - RIA Novosti/ - The United States invited former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to run for the post of UN Secretary-General, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources.
The paper says the administration of US President Donald Trump encouraged the former Hungarian leader to enter the race for the post, and the plan is awaiting a final decision. Russia and China are ready to support the idea.
"When the USA, Russia and China want the same thing in the UN Security Council, they usually get it," the paper adds.
Sources in the State Department estimate that Orban could win the support of 10 of the 15 members of the UN Security Council.
Britain and France are generally cautious when it comes to using their veto power, The Wall Street Journal says.
After the sixth preliminary vote on the selection of the UN Secretary-General, no candidate has managed to avoid a veto from one of the five permanent members of the Security Council - Russia, the USA, Britain, France and China.
Among the candidates with the best chances is former Vice President of Costa Rica and head of the UN Conference on Trade and Development Rebeca Grynspan, but two permanent members of the Security Council with veto power do not support her candidacy
