MADRID, AUGUST 5 /SRNA - RIA Novosti/ - The Spanish political bloc "Sumar" has submitted an initiative in Congress seeking to prevent the joint organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Morocco due to the crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, the newspaper "El Mundo" reported.
"In light of the current crisis, representatives of 'Sumar' have appealed to the government, demanding that it inform the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the International Association Football Federation /FIFA/, and the Government of Portugal about the need for a special review and assessment of the existing model for the joint organization of this sporting event," the newspaper reports.
"Sumar" also called on the Government to request the Royal Football Federation to activate the institutional mechanisms provided for by FIFA rules in order to verify compliance with its statutes and human rights policies, as well as to conduct an independent, public, and up-to-date human rights risk assessment in the World Cup host countries, the report states.
The proposal by "Sumar" followed an initiative by the Portuguese ecological party "Livre", which yesterday sent a letter to the Government of Portugal and the national football federation requesting that Morocco be excluded from the list of organizers for the 2030 World Cup.
