ISTOČNO SARAJEVO, OCTOBER 22 /SRNA/ – Milorad Kojić, SNSD member of the House of Representatives of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, says the establishment of the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH 35 years ago was one of the most important moments in recent history of Serbs, noting that preserving the constitutional and legal position of Republika Srpska despite all the pressure was particularly significant today.
Kojić told SRNA that, through the establishment of the Assembly, the adoption of the Republika Srpska Constitution and the passage of laws establishing all the key institutions, Republika Srpska had and has all the elements of statehood.
"It is important that, during the Defensive-Patriotic War, conditions were created specifically to ensure the survival of the Serb people on their centuries-old ancestral lands," Kojić said, ahead of the upcoming marking of the National Assembly's 35th anniversary.
He emphasized that, despite all the pressure in post-Dayton BiH, it was extremely important that the constitutional and legal position of Republika Srpska had been preserved and that it continued to function with all the elements of statehood.
"The SNSD, headd by Milorad Dodik, has preserved the historical legacy of the establishment of the Assembly of the Serb People and the creation of Republika Srpska's constitutional and legal position. Today, Republika Srpska exists with its full constitutional capacity and all the elements of statehood," Kojić stressed.
The National Assembly of Republika Srpska, the highest constitutional and legislative body within the governing structure of Republika Srpska and the central institution of its parliamentary system, was established on October 24, 1991, as the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH.
The decision was adopted by deputies elected in the autumn 1990 elections.
On the same day, at the inaugural session of the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH, several other acts were adopted, including two of particular political significance: the Decision on the Serb People Remaining in the Common State of Yugoslavia and the Decision on Calling and Conducting a Plebiscite of the Serb People in BiH.
On January 9, 1992, deputies of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted the Declaration proclaiming the Republic of the Serb People of BiH. This date is celebrated as Republika Srpska Day.
On February 28, 1992, the National Assembly adopted the Constitution of Republika Srpska and the Constitutional Law for its Implementation, formally establishing the legal and constitutional status of the Serb people as a state-forming entity.
