ATHENS, NOVEMBER 5 /SRNA/ - Rescue teams are continuing their unsuccessful search for people who may have survived the sinking of a migrant boat off the coast of the Greek island of Crete, the Greek news portal Ekathimerini reported.
The Coast Guard said it received a call yesterday after a young man from Bangladesh was found on the small island of Chrissi, southeast of Crete. He told rescuers that he had been on board a boat with 59 other people when it sank amid strong winds.
The current medical condition of the young man who was found is unknown.
The sea route from eastern Libya to Crete has become a major entry point into the EU for people from the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and Africa.
Around 38,000 undocumented migrants have arrived in Greece since the beginning of the year.
The migrants pay smugglers to transport them across the Mediterranean in unsafe boats. Most come from Sudan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Egypt.
