MADRID, OCTOBER 5 /SRNA-Reuters/ - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called a snap election for November 29 after the Spanish Parliament rejected measures proposed by the Government to ease the housing crisis.
Sanchez has become known worldwide for taking a strong stance on issues such as Palestinian statehood, defending multilateral institutions and cracking down on “tech oligarchs”, but a series of failures and scandals has weakened his position on the domestic political scene.
His defeat in the election would mark the end of one of the last left-wing governments in Europe at a time when the far right is achieving increasingly strong results across the continent.
Opinion polls show that the coalition led by the conservative People’s Party /PP/, with the support of the far-right Vox party, is ahead.
If the coalition wins the election, it would be the first time since the death of dictator Francisco Franco that a far-right party has entered the Government.
