STOCKHOLM, OCTOBER 6 /SRNA/ - Belgian physicist Francis Halzen has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced.
"Francis Halzen realized that the ice at the South Pole could be used to track particles known as neutrinos. His vision and scientific leadership were fundamental to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory," the statement said.
The academy said that, using this laboratory, researchers "can capture neutrinos from extremely energetic processes in distant parts of the universe".
The monetary component of the prize amounts to 12 million Swedish kronor, or around one million euros.
