ISTANBUL, OCTOBER 6 /SRNA/ - A female student from another school stabbed eight students with a knife at an elementary school in Istanbul's Başakşehir district, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the hospital where the injured students are being treated, he said that five students had suffered minor injuries and were expected to be discharged later in the day.
Gül said that two students remained hospitalized for treatment, but that their injuries were not life-threatening.
One child is undergoing surgery, DPA reported.
The governor described the attacker as a female student who lives in the same area and attends another school. According to him, she entered the school wearing a school uniform and stabbed children “indiscriminately.”
Hürriyet reported that the student has been detained and that an investigation is underway.
The attack took place at around 8:40 a.m. at a school in the Kayaşehir neighborhood, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
Footage posted on social media shows ambulances on the school grounds and students in a panic.
