MUNICH MASSACRE OF ISRAELI ATHLETES

BIJELJINA, SEPTEMBER 4 /SRNA/ - On September 5, 1972, Palestinian terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes in Munich, participants in the Olympic Games, who had previously been taken hostage.

During the 24-hour ordeal and the ensuing gunfight at the airport, all the hostages and four of the terrorists were killed, along with one West German police officer.

The Olympic Games in West Germany were well underway when the Israeli athletes briefly left the Olympic Village in Munich to relax.

They watched the musical "Fiddler on the Roof", and after the performance, went to dinner, which was also attended by the musical's star, Shmuel Rodensky.

When they headed back, the head of the Israeli delegation, Shmuel Lalkin, did not allow his son to spend the night in the Olympic Village, thus saving his life.

Eight terrorists from the Black September organization entered the building where the Israeli athletes were staying, killed two of them, and took nine others hostage during the operation.

However, all the hostages were eventually killed during a German police operation to rescue them.

Of the eight terrorists, five were killed during the police operation, and three were arrested.

The terrorist attack prompted numerous operations by Israel's intelligence agency Mossad, which spent two decades carrying out assassinations of those who had planned and carried out the Munich massacre.
