BUDAPEST, JULY 11 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ - Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Tamás Sulyok if he refuses to sign the constitutional amendment introducing a 12-year term limit for members of parliament.
"On Monday, July 13, Parliament will adopt the 17th amendment to the Constitution. The President will then have five days to sign it. If he fails to do so, impeachment proceedings may be initiated against him," Magyar wrote on social media.
A protest was held in front of the Presidential Palace in Budapest on Thursday against what was described as Prime Minister Magyar's authoritarian overreach of power.
The head of the Fidesz parliamentary group, Gergely Gulyás, stated that the prime minister's actions are undermining democracy in Hungary and leading the country toward autocracy.
