DRONES LIGHT UP THE PORT AND REVEAL OUTLINES OF TOWERS

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 10 /SRNA/ - New York Harbor was illuminated tonight by thousands of lights using drones in tribute to the 2,977 people killed in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

The drones took off over the water and gradually came together to recreate the two towers of the World Trade Center at their original architectural scale.

The public art display, titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,” features 2,977 illuminated drones, with each light representing one of the victims of the attacks.

“The purpose of the 2,977 Lights display is to acknowledge each loss within our shared history and remembrance of September 11. We illuminated the exact number to bear witness to every life,” said the project’s creative director and executive producer Edison Mery, the BBC reported.

According to official reports, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York and the Pentagon were carried out by members of Al-Qaeda who hijacked passenger aircraft.

Nineteen Al-Qaeda members stormed the cockpits of four passenger planes and, using box cutters as weapons, took control of the aircraft.

An American Airlines plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, and about 20 minutes later, a United Airlines plane struck the South Tower.

Both towers, each 110 stories tall, collapsed in less than two hours, causing significant damage to surrounding buildings.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were one of the events that shaped the beginning of the 21st century, in terms of the far-reaching economic, social, cultural, and military consequences that followed in the United States and around the world.

A memorial to the victims was erected at the site of the Twin Towers in New York, and new World Trade Center buildings have also been constructed.
