DEATH TOLL OF MIGRANTS IN CEUTA RISES TO 90

CEUTA, AUGUST 2 /SRNA–RIA Novosti/ – The number of migrants who died while attempting to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco has risen to 90, the Cadena SER radio station reported, citing sources.

Spanish law enforcement agencies recovered 74 bodies, while Moroccan authorities found another 16, the report said.

Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas said on Friday that around 60,000 people had entered the city from Morocco in a single day.

Unrest broke out in the city, prompting Spanish authorities to deploy additional police officers, Civil Guard units and military personnel to the streets.

The Spanish government said that most of the migrants have since returned to Morocco.

Ceuta is a Spanish enclave on the northern coast of Africa, bordering Morocco. Together with Melilla, it forms the European Union's only land border with Africa and is considered a key route for irregular migration into the EU.
