MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR 90 CIVILIANS KILLED IN WWII HELD IN OSOVO

ROGATICA, APRIL 26 /SRNA/ - A memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony were held today in the village of Osovo near Rogatica at the monument dedicated to 90 Serbian civilians who were burned alive in a barn by members of the notorious Ustashe legion led by Jure Francetić on April 27, 1942.

Archpriest-stavrophore Novica Ćebić conducted the memorial service in the presence of descendants of the victims, representatives of the local government, the Association of Former Camp Inmates, and the Association of Families of the Missing of Republika Srpska, says a press release from the Rogatica municipality.

Deputy Mayor of Rogatica, Desimir Despotović, emphasized the importance of remembering those who perished in Osovo and that this site of suffering of our ancestors deserves to be properly honored.

"The municipality of Rogatica will support the construction of a memorial chapel so that future generations can learn the truth and remember, ensuring that such crimes are never repeated," said Despotović.

The gathering in Osovo, like every new commemoration of tragic events from history, aims to nurture a culture of remembrance, honor the victims, and serve as a lasting reminder of crimes that must never be forgotten, the local government of Rogatica said.
