BELGRADE, OCTOBER 21 /SRNA/ – Serbia’s Ambassador to the United States, Dragan Šutanovac, visited the US Military Academy at West Point, where he emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of the joint struggle of Serb and American peoples for freedom, as well as continuing to strengthen bilateral relations on the foundations of this shared legacy.

During a lecture to cadets, Šutanovac also spoke about the historical ties between Serbia and the USA and the alliance between the two countries during both world wars.

He met with West Point Superintendent James B. Bartholomees and reviewed the cadets.

Šutanovac presented the West Point library with books dedicated to the legacy of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the USA, Operation Halyard, and Serbs in the US military, the Serbian Embassy in the USA announced.

This was the first visit to West Point by a Serbian official in 84 years, since King Peter II Karađorđević visited the academy during the Allied struggle in World War II.

Ambassador Šutanovac’s visit to one of the world’s most prestigious military academies reflects the increasingly intensive Belgrade -Washington diplomatic relations and the growing importance of defense and military cooperation within overall bilateral relations, forming part of a broader process of strengthening institutional ties and building long-term relations between the two countries, the Serbian Embassy in the USA cited in its statement.
