ODOBAŠIĆ: KUPINIK FORTRESS, THE LAST SERBIAN CAPITAL, STILL HOLDS MANY SECRETS

BELGRADE, AUGUST 17 /SRNA/ - Archaeologist Perica Odobašić, who is conducting research into the remains of Kupinik Fortress, the last capital of medieval Serbia, in the village of Kupinovo near Pećinci, said that the research has been ongoing for six years and that each new season brings surprises that alter previous findings.

"This is a magical place. The model that previously showed the presumed layout of Kupinik is no longer entirely accurate. Every year, we discover new sections of the fortress walls lying beneath layers of silt and soil," Odobašić said of the site on the shores of Obedska Bara.

He stressed that plans also include setting up a permanent, publicly accessible exhibition at the site.

"It would give visitors a sense not only of the fortress's history, but also of the daily life of its inhabitants, including military activities and weapons found during the excavations," Odobašić said.

The team of experts working at the site also uses modern technologies, including non-invasive geophysical methods, to map what is still hidden underground.

These years-long efforts aim to conserve, restore, and ultimately present this historic gem of Srem to the public, RTS reported.

The history of Kupinik is being brought to life not only through archaeological research, but also through events such as the Days of the Dragon, dedicated to the legacy of Despot Vuk Grgurević Branković, better known as Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk /Fiery Dragon Wolf/.

This event, featuring knightly combat, medieval music, and traditional crafts, brings the spirit of the Middle Ages to life within the fortress walls every year.

After the fall of Smederevo in 1459, Kupinik Fortress became the last capital of the Serbian despots, from where the Branković dynasty ruled for another 70 years.
