BELGRADE, APRIL 17 /SRNA/ – President of the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists Robert Garson has announced that he will attend the commemoration of the Day of Remembrance for the Jasenovac victims in Donja Gradina on Sunday, 19 April, and stressed that the truth about the Ustasha camp Jasenovac is extremely important not only for Jewish communities, but also for Serb and Roma communities.
"This is one of the lost stories. If you go to the main Holocaust museum in Israel, Yad Vashem, right next to the names of the main concentration camps you will see Jasenovac. But when people talk about the horrors that took place there - many people were killed there and only a few survived. People do not know that story about Serbs, Jews, and Roma," Garson stresses.
He says this is not only about the concept of victimhood, but about speaking the truth, reconciliation, and evidence of survival.
Garson told the press in Belgrade ahead of the commemorative - educational gathering "The Truth about Jasenovac in the NDH /1941–1945/: Historical Perspectives, Remembrance and Documentation" that the loss of memory is one of the biggest problems in Serbia’s past.
"We have lost stories, history. If we do not do this now, with only a few survivors left, all those memories will be lost," Garson warned.
