SARAJEVO, OCTOBER 27 /SRNA/ – The Court of BiH has ordered the detention of Mevlid Jašarević, whose extradition has been requested by the United States over allegations of attempted murder of US officials and employees of the US Embassy in Sarajevo.
Following a hearing held today on a motion by the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, Jašarević was placed in temporary detention for a period of up to 18 days, i.e. until November 13 or until a new decision is issued by the Court of BiH.
An appeal against this ruling does not suspend its enforcement, the Court of BiH said in a statement.
Jašarević is due to complete today his 15-year prison sentence for terrorism, imposed after he opened fire on the US Embassy in Sarajevo with an automatic rifle on October 28, 2011.
His lawyer, Alma Tabaković, was informed yesterday afternoon that the United States was requesting that Jašarević be held in detention.
Yesterday, the Court of BiH acquitted Jašarević at first instance of charges that he had threatened staff at the Institute for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions, Detention and Other Measures in Vojkovići and attempted to prevent them from performing their official duties.
