WASHINGTON, AUGUST 24 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ - The US State Department has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism after 47 years, the Treasury Department said.

The formal removal of Syria from the list marks the completion of a process launched by President Donald Trump on July 8, when he notified Congress of his administration’s intention to lift the designation.

The United States first designated Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism on December 29, 1979, during the regime of Hafez al-Assad. Syria had remained on the list longer than any other country.
