WARSAW, OCTOBER 21 /SRNA-RIA Novosti/ – Poland has suspended military aid to Ukraine following a decision by the Lviv Regional Council to dedicate next year to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army /UPA/.
Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized Lviv's decision to declare 2027 the "Year of the UPA," calling it suicidal.
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the decision had jeopardized Ukraine's chances of joining the EU.
Media reports said Lviv's decision came as Poland was preparing to send a major military aid package to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended a burial ceremony this year for the remains of a UPA leader, prompting Poland to revoke the Order of the White Eagle previously awarded to him.
The Lviv Regional Council decided today to dedicate 2027 to the UPA and its commander, Roman Shukhevych, marking the 85th anniversary of the organization's founding and the 120th anniversary of Shukhevych's birth.
Shukhevych led the UPA from 1943 to 1950. The organization carried out mass killings of the local Polish population in what is now western Ukraine.
Before the UPA was established, Shukhevych was one of the leaders of the Ukrainian volunteer battalion Nachtigall, which took part in Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union as part of the Wehrmacht and participated in the persecution of Jews.
