BERLIN, OCTOBER 25 /SRNA/ - German carmaker Volkswagen plans to cut its workforce by an additional 12,000 employees by 2030 as part of an intensified cost-cutting program, Bild reported.
The newspaper said the cuts would be carried out alongside a previously approved workforce optimization program, which already includes plans to eliminate more than 35,000 positions.
Management intends to carry out the layoffs in a "socially responsible" manner by offering employees the opportunity to participate in government retraining programs.
However, the IG Metall trade union has threatened to launch strikes starting in 2027.
Formal collective bargaining negotiations are scheduled for November 24, while the current "peace obligation" period, during which industrial action is prohibited, expires on December 31.
