VENICE CONSIDERS RAISING TOURIST ENTRY FEE TO 30 EUROS

ROME, SEPTEMBER 21 /SRNA-Reuters/ - Venice is considering expanding its tourist fee, applying it for a longer period of the year and increasing the daily charge to as much as 30 euros, councilor for budget and tax policy Michele Zuin said.

According to him, the current fee of five to 10 euros is too low to protect the city from "overtourism," but he said that the new fee for next year would have to be discussed and agreed upon with the Italian Government.

"The current fee of five to 10 euros is affordable to practically everyone. The risk is that this measure no longer has the deterrent effect it is supposed to have," Zuin told the weekly edition of the regional newspaper Il Gazzettino.

He said there was even talk of raising the fee to 50 euros, but that he believed the authorities could opt for a maximum charge of 30 euros.

The tourist fee, which applies only to visitors arriving for a single day, was introduced in 2024 and was the first of its kind in the world.

Visitors who pay it in advance may receive a lower rate, while there are also several exemptions from the fee, including children under the age of 14.
