WASHINGTON, OCTOBER 15 /SRNA/ – US authorities have launched an investigation into Congresswoman Ilhan Omar in an effort to revoke her citizenship and deport her.
Agents from the US Department of Homeland Security searched her home on October 12 as part of an investigation into alleged fraud involving her immigration documents, which her father filled out when she was a child, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Omar's office said she had done nothing wrong and described the searches as pointless.
Sources close to the investigation told the newspaper that investigators were seeking to determine whether her father had lied about her age on her citizenship application to make it appear that she was 17 and therefore a minor.
If she had been 18 when she applied, she would not have automatically qualified for citizenship.
Former President Joe Biden's administration had also sought information about Omar's immigration status, but officials decided not to open an investigation due to a lack of evidence.
The newspaper noted that, if President Donald Trump's administration succeeds in finding evidence, her denaturalization case would be among the most consequential and controversial.
Omar is known for her criticism of President Trump and represents Minnesota, home to the largest Somali community in the United States.
