TEHRAN, NOVEMBER 6 /SRNA/ – Two oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps announced, a day after similar incidents involving vessels on the same shipping route.
The statement said that one tanker struck a mine in the eastern part of the strait, while the other was hit while travelling along an “unauthorized route”. Both vessels were left disabled.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard noted that the tankers had previously switched off their navigation and identification systems and had attempted to pass through the strait with the support of the US military, the Shafaq News portal reported.
Yesterday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced that two oil tankers had caught fire after striking mines. Later, a tugboat that had approached to assist one of the vessels also caught fire.
Iran had previously warned ships against attempting to navigate unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz, stating that passage through this strategically important waterway must take place with Tehran’s approval.
The United States continues to maintain a blockade of Iranian ports.
