MOSCOW, SEPTEMBER 20 /SRNA-RIA Novosti/ – A man and a woman were killed after drones hit residential buildings in the Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said.

The governor added that one person was injured in the Leninsky district.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the city had faced its largest drone attack to date and that more than 1,600 drones had been intercepted across all defensive lines protecting the Russian capital since Saturday.

"The most massive enemy drone attack has been repelled. Since yesterday, more than 1,600 unmanned aerial vehicles have been intercepted across all defense lines. Of those, 450 were stopped on the approaches to Moscow," Sobyanin wrote on the Max messaging service.

He said the large-scale attack by Ukrainian forces had been intended to disrupt the elections, but added that "the enemy failed to achieve that goal."

Sobyanin also said a drone struck a building near Orekhovy Boulevard in southern Moscow and that emergency services were working at the scene.

Elections to the Russian State Duma and regional elections began on September 18, with voting taking place over three days.
