TÜRK: AI COULD BECOME EXISTENTIAL THREAT

GENEVA, SEPTEMBER 7 /SRNA-Reuters/ - AI could become powerful enough to pose a threat to the humanity, said UN Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

He said that in the coming days, he would call on companies to reduce the risk.

"I share the concerns of industry insiders that advanced AI could pose an existential risk to humanity," said Türk.

He called for efforts to put cast iron guarantees in place around the safety and security of AI, before it is too late.

Türk warned that just a handful of men held almost unlimited power over AI. Top AI companies include Meta META.O, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google GOOGL.O.

"At a minimum, we need countries hosting AI and those involved in its supply chains to come together around agreed red lines," he added.
