LONDON, OCTOBER 22 /SRNA/ – A retired decorator from the British town of Woking has become a millionaire after selling his collection of Pokemon cards at auction for £1.56 million.

He said he had no idea the cards were worth anything until he read in a local newspaper that one card had sold for more than £6,000.

His collection, which had been stored in an attic for 15 years, was sold at an auction in Surrey, the BBC reported.

Auction house Ewbank's, based in Surrey, said it was the most valuable trading card auction ever held in the United Kingdom and suggested it could be a European record.

"I know people always talk about treasure in the attic, but in my case, it's literally true," the unnamed seller said.

He explained that his son began collecting and trading the cards at school in the late 1990s, when he was young.

Pokemon is a Japanese franchise best known for its trading cards, video games and animated television series.
