WASHINGTON, JUNE 20 /SRNA/ – U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of trying to portray herself as a friend of the United States and boost her popularity by “begging for a photo with him”, after losing public support by refusing to back the United States in its war with Iran.
Trump stressed that only after the U.S. military victory over Iran does Meloni want to renew friendly relations in an effort to improve her ratings.
“She is currently doing poorly in Italy when it comes to popularity, probably because she turned down the United States, a country that truly loves and protects Italy, when help was needed to prevent Iran from obtaining or developing nuclear weapons,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump also claimed that Meloni repeatedly begged to be photographed with him during the G7 summit in France.
“She would not even allow us to use Italian runways and airports, which created a major logistical problem, despite the fact that the United States spends hundreds of billions of dollars every year protecting Italy and other so-called NATO allies,” Trump added.
He noted that Italy was not the only country to withhold support, saying that other NATO member states had done the same.
Meloni had previously denied Trump's claims that she had “begged for a photo with him,” stating that neither she nor Italy begs anyone.
