LONDON, JUNE 20 /SRNA/ – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing increasing pressure from Labour Party MPs, influential party figures, and some ministers to resign this weekend, the Guardian reported, citing MPs and government sources.
The Guardian reports that calls for Starmer’s resignation intensified after Labour lost nearly 1,500 seats in local elections in May.
The pressure reportedly increased further after former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham won an election in Makerfield on Thursday, which many within the party see as a potential turning point.
According to the Guardian, as many as 200 Labour MPs - nearly half of the party’s parliamentary group in the House of Commons - would support Burnham if he were to trigger a party leadership vote.
Citing a cabinet source, the newspaper also reports that some ministers are preparing to urge Starmer not to stand in any internal leadership contest if one is called.
“I think everyone feels that Starmer’s time is up and that everyone wants a dignified and orderly exit,” the source said.
Senior Labour officials have warned that Starmer could face a cabinet intervention as early as next week if he refuses to resign or agree to a managed transition of power.
