BUDAPEST, JULY 18 /SRNA/ – Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok has signed the 17th amendment to Hungary's Fundamental Law, which stipulates that the incumbent president's mandate will end on the day after the amendment enters into force.
Sulyok said he had no authority to challenge the amendment despite its potential inconsistency with constitutional principles, as the president cannot refer constitutional amendments to the Constitutional Court for review.
In a video posted on social media, he said that by signing the law he was fulfilling his constitutional duty after carefully considering the available legal options and acting in accordance with his conscience, MTI reported.
"My signature represents the final confirmation of my presidential duty and a sign of my absolute respect for the office of the president under all circumstances," Sulyok said.
On July 13, the Hungarian Parliament adopted the constitutional amendment enabling the termination of President Sulyok's mandate.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar described the move as an important step toward restoring the constitutional order and reforming state institutions.
