ATHENS, OCTOBER 14 /SRNA/ - Heavy rain and strong winds caused flooding, road closures and power outages across Greece, with the islands of Evia, the Sporades and Rhodes among the hardest-hit areas.
Greek news portal eKathimerini reported that on Evia, the swollen Kireas River forced the closure of the main road toward the island capital, Chalkida, while a prefabricated bridge collapsed near Politika in the municipality of Dirfys-Messapia.
Traffic toward Chalkida was diverted through Metochi and Dafnousa.
On Skiathos, floodwaters swept away two cars, flooded homes and uprooted trees.
Authorities issued warnings for Rhodes, urging residents and visitors to travel only if absolutely necessary.
Flooding forced the closure of parts of the road between Archangelos and Malonas on Rhodes, while bus services were suspended in Faliraki.
Firefighters rescued a woman whose car became trapped in flash flooding near Asgourou.
Power outages were also reported on Rhodes, while freight traffic was banned between Piraeus and Lavrio.
Schools and childcare centers were closed across the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea, as well as on Evia, Skiathos and Skopelos.
Greek meteorological services forecast further rain and storms in several areas, including Evia, the Sporades, eastern Thessaly, the Dodecanese and Crete.
