VATICAN CITY, OCTOBER 2 /SRNA/ - Pope Leo XIV on Friday called for artists and cultural institutions to join the Catholic Church in a common effort to counter the rise of artificial intelligence /AI/-generated art.

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity," the Pope said on X.

The pontiff said there is an "ontological difference" between genuine human-made art and what a machine can generate with the assistance of statistical calculations based on millions of artwork pieces created by others.

"Algorithms lack the spark of humanity," the pontiff continued.
