COPENHAGEN, NOVEMBER 3 /SRNA – Reuters/ – Greenland's parliament today ratified a security agreement reached earlier with US President Donald Trump.

Greenland's Foreign Minister Mute B. Egede said the ratification is an important step for the island.

"We must accept that peace and stability are no longer something we can take for granted," Egede told lawmakers.

Sixteen lawmakers voted in favor of ratification, none voted against and seven abstained.

The United States, Denmark and Greenland signed the agreement in September to ease tensions after Trump repeatedly threatened to take control of the strategically important island.

The agreement expands the US military's role in Greenland and opens the way for two new military bases and the "Golden Dome" missile defense system. It also confirms Denmark's sovereignty and the Arctic island's right to self-determination.

The agreement will enter into force once it has been ratified by both Denmark and Greenland.
