BIJELJINA, OCTOBER 24 /SRNA/ - Pablo Ruiz Picasso /1881–1973/, the founder of Cubism and one of the most important painters of the 20th century, was born on October 25, 1881.
Picasso studied painting in his native Spain and settled permanently in Paris in 1904.
Art critics have divided Picasso’s work into several periods: the Blue Period, the Rose Period, the Black Period, the Cubist Period, and the Surrealist Period.
His revolutionary Cubist paintings, beginning with Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, brought him worldwide fame.
Picasso painted Guernica, a harrowing depiction of Spain’s tragic fate under fascism, and vowed not to return to his homeland while dictator Francisco Franco remained in power. Franco died two years after the great artist.
Guernica was completed in less than two months and exhibited in the Spanish Pavilion at the World’s Fair in Paris.
Picasso was a member of the Communist Party, but after the party criticized his portrait of Stalin, claiming that it was not realistic enough, he became disillusioned with communism.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Pablo Picasso was the most prolific artist in history.
He produced 13,500 paintings, 100,000 prints and engravings, 34,000 book illustrations, and 300 sculptures.
The total value of all Picasso’s works is estimated at billions of euro.
