PALE, OCTOBER 24 /SRNA/ - The National Assembly of Republika Srpska was established to preserve the status of the Serb people in BiH, and that mission continues to this day, lawyer Ognjen Tadić told SRNA.
According to him, the establishment of the present-day National Assembly of Republika Srpska 35 years ago finally made members of other peoples understand that the Serbs were an equal people in BiH, while the Serb people gained confidence that someone was looking out for them and that the events of 1941 would not be repeated.
"What was particularly significant was that the Assembly had not been imposed by any individual or political party, but was made up of democratically elected representatives who understood that, amid the processes tearing Yugoslavia apart, national politics was the most important, and the most important goal was to preserve the status of their own people," Tadić stressed.
He added that this mission had continued for decades and would maintain its intensity until the proponents and supporters of the same policies that sought to repeat the events of 1941 had calmed down and withdrawn. It was those policies, he said, that had made the establishment of the Assembly of the Serb People and, subsequently, its own republic necessary.
The National Assembly of Republika Srpska, the highest constitutional and legislative body within Republika Srpska’s governance structure and the central institution of its parliamentary system, was established on October 24, 1991, under the name Assembly of the Serb People in BiH.
The decision to establish it was made by MPs elected in the autumn 1990 elections.
On the same day, at the constituent session of the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH, several other acts were adopted, including the Decision on the Serb People Remaining in the Common State of Yugoslavia and the Decision on Calling and Conducting a Plebiscite of the Serb People in BiH, both of which were of particular political significance.
On January 9, 1992, members of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted the Declaration on the Proclamation of the Republic of the Serb People of BiH. This date is marked as Republika Srpska Day.
On February 28, 1992, the National Assembly adopted the Constitution of Republika Srpska and the Constitutional Law for its Implementation, thereby formally establishing the state-legal subjectivity of the Serb people.
