BERLIN, NOVEMBER 3 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ – Europeans are mistaken in expecting an improvement in transatlantic relations if the Democratic Party wins today's US congressional elections, Wolfgang Ischinger, former chairman of the Munich Security Conference, has said.
"It would be a mistake for Europeans to assume that transatlantic relations will improve," Ischinger told Politico.
According to him, if US President Donald Trump is constrained locally by congressional actions and faces the threat of parliamentary investigations, he will undoubtedly shift his focus to areas where lawmakers have limited authority, such as foreign policy and trade agreements.
Ischinger stressed that Europe should therefore prepare for new and tougher economic and political demands from the USA.
"There will be people in Europe who will want to celebrate and congratulate the Democrats, but I believe it would be poisonous," he concluded
