MOSCOW, JULY 31 /SRNA/ - The situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta shows the failure of the EU's migration policy, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said.

"We are following this news with great surprise, and we sympathise with the human tragedy in any case. This is a humanitarian catastrophe that affects everyone. At the same time, it must be acknowledged that this is the collapse of the immigration policy pursued by the EU for many years," Grushko told reporters.

He added that this was a failure not only in terms of migration regulation or the lack of regulations on migration issues, but also in terms of how the EU positions itself in the world and what kind of policy it pursues towards countries it considers partners.

Thousands of young Moroccans gathered yesterday at the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Hundreds of them managed to enter Spanish territory.

Earlier, Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas said that around 60,000 people had entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco in a single day.

The newspaper El País reported that the number of migrants who died while trying to enter Ceuta from Morocco had reached 57.
