BELGOROD, MAY 23 /SRNA/ - Officers of Russia’s Federal Security Service /FSB/ prevented a suicide bomb attack involving a woman recruited by Ukrainian intelligence agencies in the border region of Belgorod.
The FSB said that fraudsters had persuaded a local resident by phone to transfer her money to a so-called “safe account,” after which unidentified individuals posing as Russian law enforcement officers contacted her and convinced her to participate in an alleged operation to arrest criminals in order to recover the stolen funds.
According to the FSB, the woman was instructed to retrieve an explosive device from a storage location, bring it to a crowded area, and detonate it.
The explosion would have killed numerous civilians, including the woman herself.
However, the woman decided to contact the regional branch of the FSB, after which effective measures were taken to prevent the crime.
The explosive device was deactivated.
A search is underway for those who planned the terrorist attack and their accomplices.
