FLOODS KILL AT LEAST 734

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 30 /SRNA – Reuters/ — At least 734 people have been killed in a devastating flood that struck the Nepal-China border region in the Himalayas, Nepal's emergency services said.

According to the latest official figures, around 3,000 people are reported missing on the Nepalese side of the border.

Chinese authorities said 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries were missing on the Tibetan side of the border crossing with Nepal, while the death toll in Tibet had reached 16.

Officials from the Tibet Autonomous Region said at a news conference that the largest number of missing foreign nationals were from Nepal, with 104 people, while 49 Indian, 33 Latvian, 18 American and 15 British nationals were also reported missing.

Authorities in Beijing provided the figures to foreign diplomatic missions.

A large glacier broke away from a mountainside on Wednesday, Aug. 26, triggering a torrent of ice, rocks, mud and debris down Himalayan rivers.
