PARIS, JULY 14 /SRNA/ - A forest fire that broke out over the weekend south of Paris spread further during the night and has engulfed an area of more than 1,900 hectares, the fire service said.
The fire broke out on Sunday, July 12, in the Les Fontainebleau forest area, about 60 kilometers from the French capital, a former royal hunting ground that is now home to peaceful villages popular with hikers and climbers.
The fire service notes that the area affected by the fire is three times the size of Gibraltar, AFP reports.
About 850 firefighters are involved in extinguishing the fire, with the help of special firefighting aircraft.
