EVACUATION OF SIVIRI RESORT

ATHENS, AUGUST 13 /SRNA/ - A major wildfire has engulfed the wooded western part of the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of residents and tourists from the resort of Siviri and surrounding villages via SMS alerts.

Local media reported that the Hellenic Coast Guard and private boat owners used their vessels to rescue large numbers of tourists from the affected coastal area and bring them to safety.

Nine Canadair firefighting aircraft and several helicopters are taking part in the firefighting operation, while thick clouds of smoke can be seen from several kilometres away.

The authorities are urging residents and tourists to follow the evacuation instructions, DPA reported.
