EBOLA TREATMENT CENTER SET ON FIRE, POLICE OFFICER KILLED

KINSHASA, JULY 1 /SRNA/ - A group of people set fire to an Ebola treatment center in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, officials said.

During the unrest, one police officer was killed, and two people were injured.

Several Ebola patients, along with individuals showing symptoms of the life-threatening virus, escaped from the treatment center in the village of Bafwabango in Ituri province, the DPA news agency reported.

A group of angry young people attempted to block the safe burial of a person suspected of having died from Ebola, despite the family having already given consent.

The center was completely burned down, and medical staff have not resumed operations due to fears for their safety.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, nearly 400 deaths from Ebola have been confirmed.

The virus continues to spread in the eastern part of the country as distrust among local communities complicates the efforts of medical and humanitarian workers.
