KINSHASA, SEPTEMBER 7 /SRNA - RIA Novosti/ - Number of confirmed Ebola cases in Congo has risen to 6,604, with death toll at 3,175, the National Institute for Public Health said.

"Over the past 24 hours, 82 new cases and 41 deaths have been recorded. The total number of cases since the start of the outbreak has reached 6,604, with 3,175 deaths," the institute said.

According to doctors and humanitarian workers interviewed by the Washington Post in Ituri and North-Kivu provinces, official statistics may reflect only part of the actual number of cases.

Many infected individuals are not included in epidemiological surveillance systems, with a significant number dying outside medical facilities.

Currently, neither a vaccine nor a treatment for the new Bundibugyo Ebola strain is officially licensed.

However, laboratory data suggest that the new Ervebo vaccine may offer some protection.
