WASHINGTON, NOVEMBER 3 /SRNA/ – Americans are voting to elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 members of the United States Senate in an election widely seen as a test of support for President Donald Trump.
If Democrats gain control of one or both chambers of Congress, they could obstruct Trump’s legislative agenda and launch investigations into his administration, DPA reports.
Control of the Senate would also allow Democrats to block Trump’s judicial nominees, potentially limiting his ability to shape the federal judiciary.
In addition to elections for the House of Representatives and the Senate, most US states are also holding gubernatorial elections, including California, Arizona and Michigan.
Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, with 218 of the 435 seats, while Democrats hold 214.
Two seats are vacant, while Representative Kevin Kiley is now an independent after leaving the Republican Party.
Many voters have already cast their ballots, with the University of Florida’s Election Lab reporting that more than 55 million early votes have been cast.
Trump was among those who voted early, casting his ballot at a polling station in Palm Beach, Florida, on October 24.
