BERLIN, JULY 13 /SRNA/ - In Germany, 99 people drowned in June, and the majority of the victims were men, according to data from the German Life Saving Association.
The association said that this figure represents the worst June record since 2003, Deutsche Welle reported.
The highest number of drownings occurs in lakes and rivers, where currents and whirlpools pose a danger.
The most common causes of accidents are sudden entry into cold water, dangerous jumps, attempts to swim long distances, and alcohol consumption before swimming.
Professor of social psychology at the University of Konstanz, Wolfgang Geissmaier, said that men are more prone to risk-taking, noting that a key factor is their tendency to overestimate their own abilities.
Felix Rebicek, who researches risks at the Brandenburg University of Health Sciences, said that it is well known that men more often swim in remote and unsupervised locations, which plays a major role because it is more difficult to respond in the event of an accident.
Men in Germany more often die in all forms of violent deaths and accidents, except for falls, which are more common among the elderly.
Data for 2024 show that three times more men were killed in traffic accidents, nearly twice as many died in fires, and they were also 25 percent more likely to be victims of homicide.
In addition, the suicide rate among men is two and a half times higher than among women.
