33 PEOPLE KILLED IN ATTACK ON MARKET

KYAUKTAW, SEPTEMBER 28 /SRNA-Reuters/ - At least 33 people were killed in an airstrike carried out by the Myanmar military near a market in Kyauktaw in the north of the country, the Arakan Army, a rebel group that controls the area, said.

"At least 33 people were killed and 36 injured in an airstrike in Kyauktaw in Rakhine State, which borders Bangladesh," the rebel group fighting the Myanmar military said.

The death toll was confirmed by humanitarian worker Wai Hun Aung, whose team operates in the area.

"This place is quite far from the areas of fighting and has nothing to do with the conflict. All the victims were civilians," Aung said.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the 2021 military coup, which triggered a civil war, while numerous armed groups, including the Arakan Army, have been fighting the military on several fronts. The airstrike on Kyauktaw was one of the deadliest such incidents since an airstrike on a hospital in December last year, when at least 30 people were killed.
