BANJA LUKA, MARCH 24 /SRNA/ - The Republika Srpska Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction, and Ecology, Bojan Vipotnik, told SRNA that Croatia is deliberately and unlawfully violating the rights of BiH as an affected country when it comes to the disposal of radioactive waste at Trgovska Gora.
Commenting on the fact that the Zagreb Fund for financing the decommissioning of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant and the disposal of Krško NPP radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel initiated a public procurement process for the removal of part of the buildings at the former Čerkezovac Barracks, where the construction of a radioactive waste repository is planned, Vipotnik said that any interventions in the border area require informing the neighboring country.
"It is obvious that Croatia is attempting to ignore the position of Republika Srpska and BiH in the most inappropriate way, which is clear – we do not want radioactive and nuclear waste in our backyard," emphasized Vipotnik.
He said that everything being done without an environmental impact study and without informing BiH about actions that could affect the health and safety of the citizens of Srpska and BiH violates international law and accepted standards.
"We will immediately request action from the institutions at the BiH level and demand an explanation from the Croatian side," Vipotnik said.
The Zagreb Fund explained that the subject of procurement is the execution of works at the location of the center for radioactive waste disposal.
The deadline for submitting offers or requests for participation in the process is April 14, and the estimated start of work is May 1.
Croatia plans to store radioactive waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, as well as existing institutional waste, at the Trgovska Gora site in the municipality of Dvor, right on the border with BiH.
